The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has announced the appointment of four new advocates to further its efforts towards promoting a gender-inclusive digital space.

The initiative aims to increase women’s participation in e-commerce and ensure their active involvement in policy-making discussions. This development is a significant step towards creating a more equitable and inclusive digital economy that benefits all stakeholders.

The UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has announced the six women entrepreneurs who will be serving as advocates for the eTrade for Women initiative during the 2024-2025 cohort.

This is a positive step towards empowering women in the business world and promoting gender equality. The selected cohort will play a crucial role in advocating for and advancing the initiative’s objectives.

On May 6th, Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan made an announcement in Geneva regarding the appointment of women digital entrepreneurs. The Secretary-General emphasized the crucial role that these entrepreneurs play in driving innovation, creating job opportunities, and promoting economic growth.

These accomplished female entrepreneurs hail from developing nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where they are leading the way in the tech industry and advocating for women’s empowerment through e-commerce and the digital economy. They announced the addition of four new trailblazers to our lineup: Vèna Arielle Ahouansou of Benin, Hilda Moraa of Kenya, Angeline Tham of the Philippines, and Ajaita Shah of India.

The “eTrade for Women” initiative, which falls under the UN Trade and Development’s e-commerce and digital economy program, will be joined by two new advocates.

This is in addition to the existing advocates, Yasmine Abdel Karim from Egypt and Ana Maria Sandoval from Colombia, who will continue in their roles for another year. It is worth noting that the program’s leading funding contributors are Australia, Germany, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.
