Egyptian javelin thrower Aseel Osama made history by becoming the first Egyptian athlete to win a gold medal at a World Athletics Championship, claiming the women’s under-20 javelin title in Oregon.
The 18-year-old secured the historic victory with a throw of 59.82 metres on her sixth and final attempt. She finished ahead of Croatia’s Vita Barbic and Taiwan’s Tai Yu-Chen to take the world title in her first World Athletics Championship appearance.
Despite an uncertain start to the competition, Osama remained composed and continued adjusting her technique throughout the event. Her decisive final throw delivered the gold medal and established her as one of Egypt’s most promising young athletics talents.
Osama began practising athletics at Smouha Club in Alexandria at the age of eight. Since then, she has built an impressive record, winning the Egyptian under-18 title in 2023, the African under-18 championship in 2025 and the senior African title in 2026.
Her rise has been supported by an intensive training programme that includes four hours of technical training and two hours of physical preparation every day. Osama has credited her coaches and family for playing an important role in her development and success.
Beyond athletics, Osama is also pursuing her education. After completing the International Baccalaureate programme, she received a scholarship to the University of Georgia in the United States. She plans to balance her university studies with high-level athletics training.
Osama’s ambitions now extend to the next major international competitions. Her immediate goals include qualifying for the 2027 World Championships and representing Egypt at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Her historic victory is also an important moment for Egyptian women’s athletics. At just 18, Osama has reached the top of the world podium and hopes her achievement will encourage more young Egyptian women to take up athletics and pursue careers in competitive sport.
