Dr. Maya Morsi, President of the National Council for Women, has stated that the Egyptian government has taken significant steps towards economic reform and social protection policies.
Morsi further emphasized that the political leadership is firmly determined to empower women, which they view as a national duty.
She made these remarks yesterday during her speech at the 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) in New York City.
On the other hand, she expressed concern over the situation of women in the Gaza Strip, especially in light of the recent Israeli aggression. Morsi also questioned how we can discuss empowering women and confronting poverty while Palestinian women face the choice between death, martyrdom, or forced displacement.
The NCW head called on the United Nations to take immediate action to stop the aggression on Gaza and demand an immediate and sustainable ceasefire. CSW68 is the United Nations’ largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The event began on March 11 and will continue until March 22, with the priority theme of “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.
