Egypt and EU Discuss Horn of Africa Stability Amid Sudan Crisis at Oslo Forum

Mona Yousef

In a high-level diplomatic meeting on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty met with Dr. Annette Weber, the European Union Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, to discuss escalating challenges in the region—particularly the protracted crisis in Sudan.

Egypt Pushes for Urgent Peace in Sudan

During the meeting held on June 11, Minister Abdel Aaty outlined Egypt’s vision for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the urgent need to end the bloodshed in Sudan, alleviate civilian suffering, and safeguard the unity and institutions of the Sudanese state. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to mediation efforts and active participation in regional and international peace tracks.

“Egypt remains dedicated to restoring peace in Sudan through inclusive diplomacy,” said Abdel Aaty, stressing the country’s multi-track approach and humanitarian focus.

Coordinated Responses to Regional Security Threats

The conversation expanded to a strategic review of regional security, with both parties recognizing the mounting threats in Somalia, Ethiopia, and neighboring states. The Egyptian minister underscored the importance of intensified international collaboration in addressing terrorism, violent extremism, and governance challenges that undermine fragile states in the region.

One focal point was the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to its successor, AUSSOM (AU Support Mission in Somalia). Abdel Aaty emphasized Egypt’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, advocating for sustainable financing and pledging continued Egyptian military participation in peacekeeping missions under AU mandates.

Safeguarding Global Trade: Red Sea Security on the Agenda

The Egyptian Foreign Minister also stressed the strategic importance of the Red Sea, calling for greater regional coordination among littoral states to protect freedom of navigation. He cautioned that threats to Red Sea security pose a direct risk to global trade, especially amid growing geopolitical instability.

“Preserving maritime security in the Red Sea is not only a regional imperative—it’s a global economic priority,” he said.

EU Commends Egypt’s Stabilizing Role

For her part, Dr. Annette Weber commended Egypt’s pivotal diplomatic and security efforts in the Horn of Africa. She reaffirmed the EU’s interest in deepening coordination with Cairo, recognizing Egypt as a key stabilizing actor in an increasingly volatile region.
