Last Sunday, numerous Hollywood celebs, including Ramy Youssef and Billie Eilish, utilized the 2024 Oscars red carpet to voice their support for a Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire by wearing Palestinian flags and Artists4Ceasefire pins.
Actors, musicians, models, and celebrities wore their Artists4Ceasefire pins, including Billie Eilish, Finneas, Quannah Chasinghorse, Mark Ruffalo, Mahershala Ali, and Youssef, who called for a permanent ceasefire on the red carpet.
Meanwhile, Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud from “The Anatomy of a Fall” sported Palestinian flag pins on their lapels.
Artists4Ceasefire is a group of artists and advocates; they stated in a press release: The pin symbolizes collective support for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all of the hostages, and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
Moreover, hundreds of actors, filmmakers, and musicians have signed an Artists4Ceasefire letter addressed to President Biden since October 26th, 2023, calling for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost.
Reportedly, as of February 29th, the estimated death toll in Palestine has topped 30,000 – a likely undercount, according to NPR, due to the difficulty in discovering and identifying bodies during the ongoing conflict.
Even though President Biden first said on February 29th that a ceasefire agreement might happen as soon as March 4th, he retreated on his statements immediately. The same day, Israeli forces opened fire on a queue of Palestinians waiting for famine relief, killing over 100 and injuring over 700.
During the Oscars 2024 ceremony, Director Jonathan Glazer discussed the topics of his film and “dehumanization” in Israel and Palestine while accepting the Best International Feature prize.
He remarked: All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present. Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation that has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of October 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?
