Vodafone Egypt Pledges Deeper Role in Women Empowerment and Digital Inclusion: Mai Yassin

Vodafone Egypt is positioning itself as a strategic partner in Egypt’s national development agenda, going beyond traditional telecommunications services to deliver lasting social impact, according to Mai Yassin, Head of External Communications and Sustainability at Vodafone Egypt.

Speaking during a session outlining the company’s sustainability vision, Yassin said Vodafone’s strategy is built on forming strong partnerships across sectors to maximize positive, on-the-ground impact. She stressed that the company’s role extends well beyond connectivity to supporting inclusive growth and long-term development.

Closing the Gender and Digital Gaps

Yassin highlighted that Vodafone Egypt’s sustainability efforts focus on several core pillars, most notably closing the gender gap and reducing the digital divide, particularly in underserved rural communities.

She announced the upcoming launch of a new initiative titled “Ma‘aki” (With You), a program designed to empower women in Egyptian villages through digital education, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship. The initiative aims not only to teach women how to use technology, but to enable them to become business owners and active contributors to their local economies.

Yassin explained that Vodafone’s research revealed a critical barrier to digital inclusion, noting that many women in rural areas rely on their husbands’ mobile phones and do not own devices of their own.

“Our goal is to empower women to own their digital tools,” she said. “When a woman gains access to technology, it transforms her life and the life of her entire family.”

Sustainable Impact Over Numbers

Addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Yassin emphasized that Vodafone Egypt is not focused on ticking boxes or achieving headline numbers, but rather on delivering measurable and sustainable impact.

“With 53 million customers, we don’t approach development programs with fear of failure or a narrow mindset,” she said. “We are deeply committed to ensuring that Vodafone’s technology and capabilities create real, lasting change that people can truly feel in their daily lives.”

Supporting Health, Government and Entrepreneurship

Yassin noted that Vodafone Egypt plays a pivotal role in supporting critical sectors, including healthcare and government services—such as tourism—through digital transformation and advanced connectivity solutions.

A significant portion of Vodafone’s sustainability strategy also targets entrepreneurship and startup development. The company supports entrepreneurs through a range of initiatives, from high-profile sponsorships like Shark Tank and the EE Awards to directly incubating startups within Vodafone to help them scale and grow.

Technology as a Tool for Human Progress

Yassin concluded by reaffirming that Vodafone Egypt’s overarching mission is to harness technology to improve people’s lives, while carefully selecting areas where the company can deliver tangible and meaningful results.

“Our ultimate goal is to use technology to make life better,” she said. “We choose our focus areas carefully to ensure that when Vodafone steps in, we make a real and visible difference.”
