US Ambassador to Egypt, Herro Mustafa, joined the inauguration of a new water purification plant in Hanady village, located in the Luxor governorate. The event took place on Monday, marking another milestone in the longstanding US-Egypt partnership.
Long-Term Commitment to Water and Sanitation
The United States has invested $3.6 billion over the past 45 years to modernize Egypt’s water and sanitation systems. These efforts have provided clean water and sanitation services to over 25 million Egyptians. Ambassador Mustafa highlighted the significance of this investment, which extends far beyond infrastructure. “This water plant symbolizes the enduring relationship between our two countries,” said Mustafa. “It demonstrates our commitment to ensuring sustainable growth and prosperity for the Egyptian people.”
Enhancing Water Access for Thousands
The new plant, situated east of Esna, will serve 133,000 residents in 10 villages. Maj. Gen. Ahmed Ramadan, Chairman of the Luxor Water and Wastewater Company, emphasized the plant’s importance. “This facility will improve the daily lives of thousands, providing clean, reliable water,” he said. The $22 million project, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), also includes a transmission line to further enhance water delivery.
A Symbol of Ongoing Partnership
Ambassador Mustafa reaffirmed that the new water purification plant was not just an infrastructure achievement but also a symbol of the robust partnership between the US and Egypt. “We are proud to support Egypt’s efforts to improve public health and ensure access to clean water for all,” she said.
This new project is part of a broader collaboration between the two nations aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs and advancing sustainable development. With continued USAID support, Egypt is working to secure a future of water security and better living standards for its citizens.
