NCW Holds Annual Meeting to Combat Violence Against Women in Universities

Within the framework of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence campaign launched by the National Council for Women, the Council organized the annual coordination meeting for units to combat violence against women in Egyptian universities in cooperation with the Korean Academy for International Cooperation (KOica) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).The meeting saw the attendance of Dr. Rania Yahya, member of the National Council for Women, Rapporteur of the Council’s Arts and Literature Committee, and Dean of the Higher Institute of Art Criticism at the Academy of Arts; Germain Haddad, Deputy Resident Representative at the United Nations Population Fund; Dr. Mona Hegras, Assistant Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Universities; Mona Al-Ghazali, National Coordinator of the Project. Combating violence against women; Shaima Naeem, Director General of the Strategic Public Administration and responsible for following up on the units for combating violence against women in Egyptian universities; Sali Zekli, a specialist on violence against women at the United Nations Population Fund; Dr. Carrie Forden, professor of community psychology and head of the psychology department at the American University in Cairo. (AUC); Dr. Yasmine Saleh, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the American University in Cairo (AUC); and Counselor Ahmed El-Naggar, Advisor to the Unit for Combating Violence against Women at the National Council for Women and President of the Court of Appeal in Ismailia Governorate.

Attendees of the meeting further tackled gender-based violence, ways for young girls to avoid it, the role of art in spreading awareness of the matter, and the importance of psychological empowerment for girls who were subjected to violence.

In her speech, Dr. Rania Yahya, member of the National Council for Women, Rapporteur of the Arts and Literature Committee of the Council, and Dean of the Higher Institute of Art Criticism at the Academy of Arts, confirmed that the 16-day activities were launched to combat violence against women within the framework of the national strategy to combat violence against women and the axes related to it, in addition to the necessity of protection within Campus protects girls from all diverse forms of violence against them.

The units’ achievements and challenges were reviewed, experiences and best practices were shared, and the units’ role in raising awareness of issues of violence against women was learned through electronic presentations of the units for combating violence against women presented by 20 universities nationwide.
