Al-Mashat, GLAM Ambassadors Discuss National Efforts in Women’s Empowerment

by Nada Khaled

The Romanian Embassy and the GLAM Group of Women Ambassadors hosted Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, as part of the celebrations of International Women’s Day, which falls on the eighth of March every year.

The event witnessed the presence of Mrs. Olivian Toderian, the Romanian Ambassador to Cairo, and 18 female ambassadors within the group of Women Ambassadors. GLAM, among them, are the ambassadors of Estonia, Slovakia, Cyprus, Denmark, Bangladesh, Mexico, Ireland, Colombia, Norway, and Switzerland, as well as Ms. Elena Panova, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Egypt.

Hosting Al-Mashat comes within the framework of International Women’s Day celebrations to discuss national efforts in the field of women’s economic and social empowerment and in appreciation of the role played by Egyptian women in various fields during the era of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which is clearly evident in the rise in the number of Women ministers in the government, as well as female representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives, in addition to women holding leadership positions in various private sector institutions and the government.

Furthermore, the meeting comes in appreciation of Minister Rania Al-Mashat’s role in strengthening the Arab Republic of Egypt’s economic relations with multilateral and bilateral development partners and coordination between national bodies, international and regional institutions, United Nations organizations, and its affiliated agencies to meet the requirements and priorities of development in Egypt.

The Ministry of International Cooperation, in coordination with national authorities, is working to implement many development cooperation programs in the various governorates of Egypt, in partnership with bilateral development partners from friendly and brotherly countries, in multiple fields, including empowering women, girls, and youth, protecting children and enhance their capabilities, as well as supporting small and medium enterprises, health, education, capacity building and investment in human capital, food security, sustainable infrastructure, and capacity building programs.

The Ministry is also the national coordinator of the strategic framework for the partnership between Egypt and the United Nations 2023-2027 and co-chair of the joint management committee with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt. The framework includes five main axes: comprehensive economic development, social justice, sustainability of natural and environmental resources, good governance, and the empowerment of women and girls.

These axes are consistent with the national priorities represented by Egypt’s Vision 2030, sectoral strategies, and presidential initiatives, and they also integrate with the national platform of the “Novi” program, the axis of the link between water, food, and energy projects, and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.
