The President of the Rotary International Foundation announced at the opening of the international conference in Melbourne, Australia, that Rotary Egypt has won a $2 M grant to eliminate cervical cancer.
Head of Rotary Egypt, Mayan Raslan, expressed her pride, indicating that this prestigious award brings massive honor to the Egyptian state, as only one project is selected by the international foundation each year to win this grant.
In Egypt, nearly 10% of women have undergone cervical cancer screenings in the last 5 years, and of those diagnosed with cervical cancer, over half have died as a result).
The Rotary-led initiative “United to End Cervical Cancer in Egypt” aims to reduce cervical cancer cases and enhance women’s health in Egypt through targeted awareness-raising and improved access to preventative care.
Leading the initiative, Rotary Egypt stated: We unite to end cervical cancer in Egypt, which aims to reduce cervical cancer cases and promote women’s health in Egypt by raising awareness and improving access to preventive care.
It is worth noting that the program started at the initiative of the Egyptian Rotary Clubs and was modeled after the Egyptian Women’s Health Initiative launched by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on breast cancer.
It provides regular check-ups for 30,000 girls aged from 9 to 15 years old and 10,000 women and organizes public awareness campaigns to reach 4 M people.
President of Rotary International Foundation, Jennifer Jones, said: Rotary believes every woman and girl should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live. And through the “We Can End Cervical Cancer in Egypt” initiative, we are taking a decisive step toward achieving our goal.
She added: By providing preventive care, we can empower them with the knowledge and resources they need to stay healthy.
The “We Can End Cervical Cancer in Egypt” initiative confirms Rotary members’ commitment to preventing cervical cancer and improving women’s health by building a long-term, multi-stakeholder partnership on the ground in Egypt with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population and the Egyptian Society of Cervical Colposcopy.
