Egyptian women continue to strengthen their presence across science, finance, entrepreneurship, healthcare, culture, politics, and sustainable development, reinforcing Egypt’s growing role in advancing women’s leadership at the national, regional, and international levels.
A Global Medical Honor for Professor Alia Hassan Abdel Fattah
The National Council for Women (NCW), headed by Counselor Amal Ammar, congratulated Professor Alia Hassan Abdel Fattah, Professor of Critical Care Medicine at Cairo University’s Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine and former Head of the Critical Care Department, after receiving the 2026 Gold Medal for Global Impact in Nuclear Cardiology from the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC).
The award is considered one of the highest international recognitions in the field. The NCW described the achievement as a reflection of the outstanding scientific contributions of Egyptian women and their growing international influence in medicine and research.
Professor Abdel Fattah is internationally recognized as one of the pioneers of nuclear cardiology, contributing significantly to the advancement of clinical applications while mentoring generations of physicians and researchers.
Women’s Leadership and Regional Cooperation
During the Ninth Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Women held in Islamabad, Pakistan, Counselor Amal Ammar met with Libya’s Minister of State for Women’s Affairs to discuss expanding cooperation in women’s empowerment.
The discussions focused on exchanging expertise in economic, social, and political empowerment, capacity building, development planning, and reporting under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The Libyan delegation also expressed interest in benefiting from Egypt’s successful experience in advancing women’s rights.
Economic Empowerment Through Heritage Crafts
The National Council for Women showcased Egyptian Tally embroidery at Source Fashion London, one of Europe’s leading fashion sourcing exhibitions.
The exhibition featured scarves, ready-to-wear garments, leather bags, accessories, and handcrafted products created by women artisans from Assiut and Sohag alongside contemporary Egyptian designers. The initiative generated strong interest from international buyers, highlighting the global commercial potential of Egyptian heritage crafts.
The participation forms part of the Social and Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in Assiut and Sohag project, implemented by UN Women in partnership with the NCW and funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
Supporting Women Through Local Handicrafts
In Upper Egypt, the Belana Handicrafts Complex in Aswan’s Nasr El Nuba continues to strengthen women’s economic empowerment while preserving Nubian heritage.
The center trains women in sewing, leather production, palm crafts, embroidery, crochet, beadwork, and is preparing to launch handwoven carpet and kilim workshops, creating sustainable employment opportunities while safeguarding traditional craftsmanship.
Financial Inclusion Continues to Expand for Egyptian Women
At a conference organized by Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) in partnership with UN Women, the National Council for Women, the European Union, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, FRA Vice Chairman Dr. Islam Azzam announced that women represented 53% of all microfinance beneficiaries during the first quarter of 2026.
Around 1.8 million Egyptian women benefited from microfinance, accounting for approximately 45% of the EGP 74 billion total financing portfolio. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to expanding financial inclusion, developing innovative financial products, and supporting women, youth, and underserved communities.
UN Women highlighted the importance of programs such as Tahwesha, which helps rural women access secure digital financial services, improve financial literacy, and strengthen entrepreneurship opportunities.
New Leadership Roles for Egyptian Women
Several prominent Egyptian women announced significant career milestones.
Lamis Ali Negm was appointed Economic Investment in Intellectual Property Expert at the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority, bringing more than 35 years of banking, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility experience to strengthen the country’s knowledge-based economy.
Meanwhile, veteran banking executive Nevine Kashmiry announced her departure from The United Bank after serving as Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. She has joined GB Corp as an Independent Board Member, marking a new chapter in her distinguished financial career.
Women’s Voices in Arts and Culture
Internationally acclaimed conductor Maestro Nader Abbassi said women are becoming increasingly visible in orchestral conducting, particularly across Europe, where female conductors are achieving remarkable success.
He noted that conducting is well suited to women and suggested that historical underrepresentation reflected social attitudes rather than educational barriers.
In theatre, the Isis International Women’s Theatre Festival opened submissions for the Fathia El Assal Playwriting Competition as part of its fourth edition. The competition welcomes professional playwrights of both genders while reserving its emerging writers category exclusively for women, encouraging new female voices in Arabic theatre.
Women’s Health and Scientific Discoveries
New research continues to improve understanding of women’s health.
A study published in Circulation Research identified the MYH9 gene as a possible explanation for biological differences in how cardiovascular disease develops in women. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) found that the gene is linked to fibrous arterial plaques, which are more common among women, potentially supporting more personalized approaches to cardiovascular care in the future.
Another Australian study found that vegetables supporting heart health may differ between men and women. Researchers reported that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage appear especially beneficial for women, while legumes may provide greater cardiovascular protection for young men.
Travel Advice for Pregnant Women
Travel experts also highlighted that many airports and airlines offer special assistance for pregnant travelers, including priority check-in, faster security lanes, early boarding, mobility assistance, and private screening options.
Policies vary between airlines, and medical certificates may be required during later stages of pregnancy. Health experts continue to recommend seatbelt use below the abdomen, regular movement during long flights, adequate hydration, and reviewing airline pregnancy policies before booking.
Women in Politics and Social Development
Member of Parliament Dr. Nashwa Akl said the July 23 Revolution laid important foundations for women’s participation in national development, while emphasizing that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s era has witnessed unprecedented progress in women’s leadership, education, employment, and social protection.
Speaking at a conference on Egyptian family cohesion, NCW President Counselor Amal Ammar stressed that empowering women remains central to strengthening families and building Egypt’s New Republic. She described investment in women as an investment in both families and the nation’s future.
International Inspiration
Beyond Egypt, women also continued breaking barriers globally.
Saudi Arabia celebrated the appointment of Azdehar Allaf as the country’s first female Managing Director in the pilgrim services sector, reflecting Vision 2030’s commitment to expanding women’s leadership.
The world also remembered aviation pioneer Wally Funk, who passed away at 87. After decades of waiting, she fulfilled her lifelong dream by traveling to space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard mission at age 82, becoming the oldest woman to reach space and inspiring generations of women in aviation and science.
