South Korea Nominates First Woman Prime Minister in Two Decades to Lead AI Transformation

Amira El Gamal

South Korea is on the verge of a historic leadership milestone after President Lee Jae-myung nominated Han Seung-sook, Minister of SMEs and Startups, to serve as the country’s next Prime Minister.

If approved by Parliament, Han will become the first woman to hold the position in South Korea in two decades, marking a significant step forward for women’s representation in senior government leadership.

Han brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors. Before entering government service, she served as Chief Executive Officer of Naver, one of South Korea’s leading technology companies, earning recognition for her leadership in innovation and digital transformation.

According to the presidential office, Han is expected to play a central role in accelerating South Korea’s artificial intelligence strategy and strengthening the country’s position as a global technology leader.

Officials believe her experience in technology and entrepreneurship will help drive the next phase of economic development, particularly by connecting the benefits of growth to small and medium-sized enterprises and startup ecosystems.

South Korea’s economy has been supported by strong performance in semiconductor manufacturing and exports, and the government sees artificial intelligence as a key pillar of future competitiveness and sustainable growth.

Han’s nomination also highlights the growing influence of women leaders in sectors traditionally dominated by men, including technology, business, and public policy. Her potential appointment reflects broader international trends toward increasing female participation in decision-making roles across both government and industry.

While the position of Prime Minister in South Korea is largely administrative within the country’s presidential system, the role remains one of the most influential offices in government and carries significant responsibility in coordinating national policy priorities.

For women across Asia and beyond, Han Seung-sook’s nomination represents another powerful example of female leadership at the highest levels of public service, technology, and economic development.
