In the spirit of the International Day for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, which takes place globally on February 6 each year, the National Council for Women (NCW) released an infographic detailing the work of the “National Commission for the Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation” from 2019 until December 2023.

The National Commission’s efforts were shown through the following:

– Since the Commission’s formation, 6,033 activities have been carried out in total.

– Outreach efforts aimed at 108,633,748 (36,103,223 males, 62,118,497 females, and 10,412,028 children)

– 29,103,508 Door-knocking campaigns

– 67,400 Training courses

– 6,334 Complaints and inquiries

– Media and social media: 15 activities targeted 78,787,975 (48,729,439 women/30,058,536 men)

– 18,608 Awareness and medical convoys

– 102,848 Event

– 4,488 National No. Caravans

The NCW is not the only organization that fights FGM. The UN is leading a global initiative that seeks the eradication of female genital mutilation (FGM), working in conjunction with agencies such as UNFPA and UNICEF. The collaborative initiative supports grassroots organizations, coalitions, and movements led by survivors and focuses on 17 countries in Africa and the Middle East. With the intention of outlawing FGM by 2030, these projects push for modifications to laws, policies, and societal norms.

These steps may seem small, however, any step taken to eradicate FGM is a step in the right direction and the best course of action to take.
