Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, departed for Geneva on Sunday morning to undertake an official visit and participate in the high-level segment (HLS) of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the Conference on Disarmament (CD), where dignitaries from over 110 countries will be present.

The high-level segment of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council is scheduled to take place from February 26 to 28, 2024. As part of Egypt’s delegation,  the minister will deliver a statement on behalf of Egypt at the UNHRC-HLS. Additionally, he will engage in sideline events focusing on key regional and international crises and their implications for global human rights conditions. Of particular concern is the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which will be a focal point of the discussions. Shoukry will also participate in the Conference on Disarmament under the presidency of Indonesia. The Conference on Disarmament serves as the world’s primary multilateral forum for negotiations on disarmament.

During his visit, Shoukry will meet  with numerous senior officials and diplomats in Geneva. These discussions will provide an opportunity to engage in bilateral and multilateral exchanges, fostering diplomatic relations and cooperation on various fronts.

Furthermore, Minister Shoukry will take part in the meetings of the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee, established following the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh in November. The primary focus of these meetings will be to discuss international efforts, in collaboration with UN officials, aimed at resolving the Gaza crisis and bringing about a sustainable resolution.

The visit to Geneva signifies Egypt’s commitment to actively participate in international forums and contribute to discussions on crucial global issues. Minister Shoukry’s involvement in the UNHRC-HLS and the CD demonstrates Egypt’s dedication to promoting human rights and advancing disarmament efforts on the international stage.
