Egypt strains to broker a cease-fire in Gaza: El Sisi

by Aya Salah Ed-din

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said that Egypt aims to negotiate a truce in Gaza within a few days, which would increase relief delivery and allow displaced residents in the enclave’s south to return north.

“We are talking about reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, meaning a truce, providing the biggest quantity of aid,” El-Sisi said in a message recorded during a visit to a military academy.

The president added that this will entail “curbing the impact of this famine on people, and also allowing the people in the center and the south to move towards the north, with a very strong warning against incursion into Rafah.”

Sisi also cautioned of the potential of an Israeli attack into Rafah, where an estimated 1.5 million Palestinians have taken refuge along Gaza’s border with Egypt.

Aid authorities issued an alert of an impending starvation in the seaside enclave.

Egypt has joined global calls for Israel to reopen its land borders with Gaza to allow additional supplies to enter.

Expecting an influx of displaced Palestinians clustered close to its border, Egypt has been trying to broker a deal between Israel and Hamas in the hopes of achieving a truce and the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian captives detained in Israel.
