Egypt Reiterates Support for Palestinians, Pushes for Gaza Ceasefire in Al Sisi’s Call with Abbas

The Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi,  reaffirmed unwavering support for Palestinians and their pursuit of an independent state during a phone call with Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, on Tuesday. The conversation highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip.

El-Sisi extended his Ramadan greetings to the Palestinian people, particularly those in Gaza facing worsening humanitarian conditions. Abbas expressed his gratitude for Egypt’s steadfast support and reciprocated Ramadan well wishes for Egypt.

This call comes amidst ongoing international pressure on Israel to agree to a ceasefire. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has intensified since October 2023, with Gaza enduring a brutal war that has claimed over 31,000 lives, the majority being women and children.

Underscoring its commitment to the Palestinian people, Egypt distributed 10,000 iftar meals, 7,000 suhoor meals, and 25,000 loaves of bread in Gaza on the first day of Ramadan. The Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERCS) also announced plans to distribute 30,000 daily meals throughout the holy month to alleviate the growing food insecurity in Gaza
