Egypt, Bahrain Join China’s Moon Mission

News Agencies

Egypt and Bahrain have teamed up with China for its upcoming lunar mission, Chang’e-7, scheduled for 2026. This collaboration marks a first in lunar exploration for the two Arab nations and highlights China’s expanding space partnerships.

The agreement involves building a hyperspectral camera to analyze the lunar surface, particularly the South Pole region where water ice is suspected. This camera is one of six international payloads chosen by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) for Chang’e-7. Other participating nations include Thailand, Russia, Italy, Switzerland, and an NGO from Hawaii.

This partnership represents an opportunity for Egypt and Bahrain to develop their space programs. Egypt already boasts a growing satellite network and a new assembly facility built with China’s assistance. John Sheldon, a space consultant, believes Arab nations are seeking collaboration  in space exploration.

An interesting wrinkle in this partnership is Bahrain’s membership in the US-led Artemis Accords, which outlines principles for space exploration and differs from China’s plans. Meanwhile, Bahrain maintains close ties with the US, hosting the Fifth Fleet. Additionally, the Artemis Accords don’t restrict signatories from collaborating on other space initiatives.

This development underscores China’s growing influence in space exploration and its willingness to partner with various countries, even those with ties to the US.
