Arab League Demands Putting Gender Equality within Peace and Security Issues

The General Secretariat (Social Affairs Sector – Women’s Department) held the Arab preparatory meeting for the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations, session “67”, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Arab Women headed by the Republic of Iraq, the current president of the Committee for Arab Women.

The meeting witnessed a distinguished presence from Arab countries, where male and female ministers and heads of national mechanisms concerned with women’s affairs from eighteen Arab countries participated in the meeting.

The participants discussed the draft Arab statement that will be presented at the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women under the title “Innovation, technological change and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The main goal of this coordination meeting is to come up with an Arab vision through the formulation of this statement to achieve gender equality, empower women and girls, and upgrade the livelihood of Arab women.

The meeting took place in cooperation with the United Nations Women’s Regional Organization for the Arab States; Dr. Yusra Karim Mohsen chaired the committee, Director General of the Iraqi Women’s Empowerment Department, and in the presence of the Minister of Social Development of the Republic of Sudan, Ahmed Adam Bakhit, head of the previous session of the Arab Women’s Committee, and Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh Assistant Secretary-General for the Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States.

The General Secretariat is keen to hold annual meetings of the Arab Women’s Committee at the beginning of February, coinciding with Arab Women’s Day on the first of February, and based on the Arab League’s keenness to pay attention to issues of women’s rights and empowerment.
