The signing of a grant agreement between the Japanese Embassy in Cairo and the World Health Organization (WHO) was witnessed by H.E. Dr Rania Al-Mashat, the Minister of International Cooperation. The grant is worth $8.3 million and it will support the development and fulfilment of hospitals’ needs in the border governorates in Egypt. This will enhance their ability to provide medical supplies and needs to people residing in Gaza.

As part of the concerted efforts of the Egyptian state, in conjunction with several international partners, we are working towards addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. This initiative is aimed at providing relief and support to the affected population in the region, and we remain committed to continuing our collaborative efforts towards this end.

Dr. Hanan Balkhi, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, and Dr. Hatem Amer, Assistant Minister of Health and Population for International Relations Affairs, attended the signing of the grant agreement. The Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Ambassador Oka Hiroshi, and Dr. Nima Abed, the WHO Representative in Egypt, signed the agreement.

In her speech at the signing ceremony, Al-Mashat emphasized the importance of international partners working together with national authorities represented by the Ministries of International Cooperation and Health and Population. This collaboration supports the Egyptian state’s efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, under the guidance of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The state is providing necessary supplies and aid to hospitals in the border governorates to enhance their ability to treat and care for those injured and affected on the Palestinian side.

The Egyptian government is fully committed to supporting those affected by the crisis in Palestine. The government is working with international partners to provide assistance to millions of displaced individuals and tens of thousands of women and children who have been injured. The Ministry of Health has been instrumental in alleviating their suffering.
