Egyptian fencer Sarah Amr Hosny has made history after winning the silver medal in the women’s foil competition at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy.
The 16-year-old Egyptian fencer faced Greece’s Aikaterini-Maria Kontochristopoulou in a closely contested final on Monday. After a highly competitive bout, Hosny was narrowly defeated 15–13, securing the silver medal and a historic second-place finish.
Hosny’s achievement marks a major milestone for Egyptian women’s fencing. She became the first Egyptian woman in history to win a medal in fencing at the Mediterranean Games, opening a new chapter for women’s participation and success in the sport.
Her performance is also a notable achievement at just 16 years old, highlighting her potential to establish herself as one of Egypt’s promising young fencers on the international stage.
The 2026 Mediterranean Games, the 20th edition of the event, are currently being held in Taranto, Italy, and will continue through September 3. The competition features 3,803 athletes representing 26 countries across a wide range of sports.
Egypt is competing in 23 sports at this year’s Games and is looking to add more medals to its long-standing record in the Mediterranean Games.
Egypt currently ranks sixth among the most successful nations in the history of the Mediterranean Games, with 620 medals, including 156 gold, 209 silver and 255 bronze medals.
Hosny’s historic silver adds another achievement to that record while marking an important breakthrough for Egyptian women’s fencing at one of the region’s major multi-sport events.
