Egypt’s Women’s Health Initiative Expands Free Screening and Treatment Services Nationwide

Egypt’s Women’s Health Initiative has developed into a comprehensive national healthcare program that provides free screening, diagnosis, treatment, and awareness services for women across all governorates, helping improve early detection rates and overall quality of life.

Launched in July 2019, the initiative places women’s health at the center of preventive healthcare by offering an integrated medical pathway that combines public awareness, clinical screening, specialized treatment, and long-term follow-up at no cost.

Early detection of breast cancer remains the initiative’s primary objective, as early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. Women aged 18 and above are encouraged to participate through nationwide awareness campaigns while benefiting from a coordinated healthcare system that guides patients from initial examination through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

The program also prioritizes quality of life by promoting breast-conserving surgical approaches whenever medically appropriate. Treatment plans are designed to reduce tumor size before surgery when possible, minimize treatment side effects, and provide comprehensive psychological, nutritional, and social support throughout the recovery journey.

A nationwide digital health system connects approximately 3,700 primary healthcare units, 102 public hospitals, 34 specialized treatment centers, and 12 mobile clinics serving remote communities. More than 30,000 healthcare professionals, including physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, health educators, and administrative staff, have received specialized training to support the initiative.

The program has also contributed to significant improvements in healthcare efficiency. The average time between diagnosis and treatment has been reduced from more than 200 days to 49 days, with ongoing efforts to shorten this period even further.

Since its launch, the initiative has recorded more than 67 million screening and awareness visits, while over 70 percent of breast cancer cases have been diagnosed during the first and second stages, substantially improving treatment success rates. Breast cancer mortality has also declined by approximately 15 percent over three years, reflecting the impact of early detection, timely treatment, and coordinated patient care.
