Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has joined forces with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to launch a comprehensive program aimed at combating online violence against women.

A key element of this joint effort involves the establishment and development of girls’ clubs within youth centers nationwide, aiming to create secure and empowering spaces where young women can acquire knowledge, develop skills, and address issues related to online safety and gender-based violence. Furthermore, the program will prioritize the strengthening of capacities within Egyptian government institutions to effectively prevent and address online violence against women.

Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing the positive impact of previous joint initiatives between the Ministry and the UNODC in supporting youth and women. He expressed his commitment to continuing this fruitful partnership to address critical social issues.

UNODC’s Commitment to Gender Equality

Ms. Mirna Bouhabib, Deputy Regional Representative of the UNODC, echoed the importance of joint action in combating violence against women, particularly in the digital realm. She emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach that addresses the root causes of online violence and empowers women to navigate the digital world safely.

Multi-Phase Approach For Violance Combating

The program will be implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on building awareness, developing training programs, and establishing a strong foundation for future interventions. The second phase will involve the implementation of targeted programs at the community level, including the establishment of girls’ clubs and capacity-building initiatives for government officials.

Towards a Safer Digital Future for Women in Egypt

This collaborative effort between the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the UNODC represents a significant step towards creating a safer and more inclusive online environment for women in Egypt. By addressing the issue of online violence, the program aims to empower women, promote gender equality, and ensure that everyone can fully participate in the digital world without fear of harm.
