Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, awarded the rising star Farida Khalil, a member of Egypt’s national modern pentathlon team, the gold medal at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup, hosted at the American University in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement campus.
At just 14 years old, Khalil secured first place in the final with 1464 points. Ukraine’s Valiant Horieyeva claimed the silver with 1445 points, while Anastasia Malashynuka, also competing as a neutral athlete, earned the bronze with 1428 points.
The medals were presented by Dr. Sobhy, along with Dr. Aya Medani, member of the International Olympic Committee, Rob Stoll, President of the International Federation, Dr. Tarek Shawky, representative of the American University in Cairo, Sherif El Arayan, President of the Egyptian Federation, Ismail Moussa, President of the North African Federation, Dr. Shady Abdel Aziz, Treasurer of the Egyptian Federation, and Dr. Leila Genesi, member of the International Federation Board.
Dr. Sobhy expressed his immense pride in Khalil’s achievement. He further noted that Egypt’s successful hosting of the event showcases the nation’s capability to organize major international sporting events.
Egypt’s Ganna Atiya placed 14th with 1347 points, while her teammate Zeina Amer ranked 16th with 1327 points. Sarah Mohamed finished 18th with 1276 points.
This tournament is the first of the World Cup series, featuring 450 male and female athletes, and marks the debut of the new obstacle course system replacing equestrianism, which was dropped from the sport following the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The second World Cup leg will take place in Hungary in April, followed by the third in Bulgaria in May, with Egypt set to host the World Cup Final in Alexandria from July 4 to 6.
