NCW Urges Global Collaboration to Tackle Cyber Violence Against Women at UN Human Rights Council

At the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, , Chair of the National Council for Women, Amal Ammar,  addressed the rising threat of digital violence against women. Her participation in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) underscored Egypt’s commitment to securing a safe digital environment for women, as part of the broader agenda for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Ammar, representing Egypt alongside Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Atty and other key officials, highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in protecting women from online harassment and abuse. She emphasized that as digital spaces increasingly become integral to women’s economic, social, and political empowerment, ensuring their safety in these environments is crucial to their progress.

The Egyptian delegation’s report outlined a series of initiatives to combat digital violence, including legislative frameworks aimed at curbing online harassment and abuse. Additionally, Ammar underscored the country’s commitment to fostering international partnerships to enhance cybersecurity and build global capacity in tackling this emerging form of violence.

In addition to addressing the digital threats faced by women, Ammar reviewed Egypt’s broader advancements in empowering women politically, socially, and economically. The nation has made significant strides in increasing women’s participation in leadership roles, enhancing access to healthcare, and launching financial inclusion programs specifically targeting women.

As part of its efforts to confront emerging challenges, Egypt has also focused on safeguarding women’s rights in the digital sphere, calling for global solidarity to create an environment free from cyber violence and online exploitation. The country’s appeal for cooperation and capacity-building seeks to ensure a more secure and equitable digital future for women worldwide.
