Egypt to Launch National Initiative For Vehicle Conversion to Natural Gas

News Agencies

Egyptian Prime Minister , Mostafa Madbouly , led a high-level meeting today in the New Administrative Capital to finalize preparations for the national initiative aimed at converting vehicles to run on natural gas. Set to launch in early 2025, the program is part of the government’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs, and support economic sustainability.

Key officials attended the meeting, including Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk, Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi, Central Bank Deputy Governor Essam Omar, and executives from the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).

Key Goals: Sustainability and Economic Relief

Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Ministries of Finance and Petroleum. He explained that the initiative serves two main goals: reducing harmful carbon emissions and providing financial relief to citizens by offering a more affordable fuel option.

Madbouly stated, “This initiative will not only help the environment but also provide citizens with a cost-effective, cleaner alternative to gasoline and diesel.”

Plan to Convert 1.5 Million Vehicles

Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi shared details of the initiative, which aims to convert 1.5 million vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG). The conversion plan is expected to cut Egypt’s diesel consumption by 50%, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on subsidized petroleum products.

Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsany noted that the meeting also discussed the technical and logistical steps involved in the process. Additionally, a public awareness campaign will educate citizens on the benefits of switching to natural gas-powered vehicles.

Environmental and Economic Impact

The program is set to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million tons annually, contributing to improved air quality and a healthier environment for Egyptians. Finance Minister Kouchouk emphasized that the switch to CNG would offer not just environmental benefits but also substantial financial savings for citizens.

“We expect that the initiative will reduce fuel costs for citizens while promoting sustainability,” Kouchouk said.

How Citizens Can Participate

To facilitate participation, a unified online platform is being tested, allowing citizens to register for the vehicle conversion program. Applications will also be accepted at customer service centers connected to participating companies.

This initiative is designed to make the process as seamless as possible for citizens, ensuring easy access to the benefits of converting vehicles to natural gas.

A Step Toward Cleaner Energy

This program is a significant step in Egypt’s transition to cleaner energy sources and reflects the government’s broader commitment to sustainable development and economic reform. By embracing natural gas, Egypt aims to reduce its environmental footprint while offering long-term economic benefits to citizens.

The initiative marks a crucial milestone in Egypt’s energy strategy, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and foster a more sustainable future for the country.
