On Friday, many Egyptian governorates announced new bus, taxi, and microbus fares. These increases came after the government raised fuel prices.
Fares for public buses increased by EGP 1, while air-conditioned buses saw a more considerable increase of EGP 2. Taxis also had higher fares. In Cairo, the meter started at EGP 10.5 for the first kilometer, and waiting time was more expensive, according to Ahram Online.
According to sources contacted by the website, some ride-sharing companies, like Careem, haven’t changed their fares yet. However, other companies, like Uber and DiDi, were not available for comment, but they are all expected to announce new prices in the coming days.
The government has required transportation companies to display the new fares and has set up hotlines for complaints about overcharging. This fuel price increase is part of the government’s plan to end subsidies and balance the budget gradually.
The Ministry of Petroleum announced an increase in diesel and gasoline prices by up to LE 2 for the third and final time in 2024, effective Friday, 18/10/2024.
The adjustments, issued by the Fuel Automatic Pricing Committee (FAPC), will see 95-octane gasoline rise to LE 17 from LE 15, 92-octane gasoline rise to LE 15.25 from LE 13.75, 80-octane gasoline rise to LE 13.75 from LE 12.25, and diesel prices rise to LE 13.50 from LE 11.50.
