The Nobel Prize committee selected Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi as 2023’s recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize last Friday.
According to the Nobel Committee, the renowned activist was recognized for her efforts to advance women’s rights in Iran.
In Iran, Mohammadi is currently serving a 31-year prison sentence and has received 154 lashes.
Reiss-Andersen, a member of the Nobel Prize Committee, stated that the Iranian feminist received the prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her continued efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all.
She further emphasized that the award is a tribute to the thousands of Iranian women who participated in protests for women’s rights last year.
