The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), an affiliate of the Ministry of Environment, and the Association for Sustainable Quality of Living (Estidama) just signed a cooperation protocol for the launch of the second phase of the “Award for confronting climate change in Africa”.
Minister of Environment and Ministerial Coordinator and Envoy for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27), Yasmine Fouad, attended the signing ceremony.
She emphasized the prime importance of the award as a mechanism for achieving momentum and the participation of different parties in countering the effects of climate change.
The first phase enjoyed a large turnout at various levels, local and African, mainly from women with distinguished environmental projects, she said.
She further explained: Building on the already achieved success of the first edition aims to encourage the participation of various stakeholders to adopt an environmentally friendly approach, and mitigate the repercussions of climate change, applying initiatives based on innovations.
On the other hand, the second phase was prompted by the success of the first edition whose winners were honored during the conference.
The main goal is to support measures of confronting the effects of climate change and achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), as well as encouraging initiatives towards a better green future for the continent and the world, as a whole, on the road to the upcoming COP28 in Dubai.
According to Fouad, the award is of four categories: the first is dedicated to large and medium corporations in climate change mitigation and adaptation technology, and the second is for small, micro, and emerging companies owned by ladies. The other two categories are for banks & investors, universities, research centers, and non-profit institutions.
Notably, the first phase of the award was launched at COP 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh last November to encourage the relevant sectors and stakeholders to follow an eco-friendly approach and mitigate the effects of climate change. It will also inspire stakeholders to apply innovation-based initiatives in science and technology to support the measures to combat climate change and achieve sustainability goals.
