Last Sunday, the well-known chocolate brand “Mars chocolate bars” tossed their usual plastic wrappers and replaced them with new eco-friendly paper wrappers. The new packaging has launched in the UK on Monday, May 29.
The company released a statement assuring customers that the recyclable wrapper won’t affect the taste or freshness of the chocolate bars. They also guaranteed consumers that they could get a refund or scan a QR code on the packaging to report their complaints in case they weren’t satisfied with the product.
The statement also emphasized that finding a proper paper wrapper with a reasonable level of barrier properties to protect the chocolate is not such an easy task.
It is worth noting that Nestlé, Mars’s competitor started recyclable wrappers first and has been using them since the beginning of 2021. Moreover, 9 out of 11 Quality Street sweets swapped to paper wrappers, as well, last December. And now Mars has followed in their footsteps.
Mars stated it is investing hundreds of millions of pounds to redesign thousands of types of packaging and meet its goal of reducing the use of virgin plastics by a quarter in the short run while maintaining an increased use of recycled plastic in its packaging.
