TikTok, the short-video platform, has announced that it has updated its Community Guidelines, which now includes new provisos relating to synthetic media, hate speech, and election integrity efforts.

The updates seem to better align with what US officials may prefer, in regards to its moderation approach, while TikTok also notes that its Community Principles are also based on its ’commitment to uphold human rights and align with international legal frameworks.

The TikTok Community Values aim to assist users and the platform community as a whole in understanding platform choices.

This strives to keep TikTok a safe area for users, since those values are consistent with TikTok’s commitment to human rights and international law.

In addition to the TikTok community, the TikTok platform has consulted members of over 100 organizations around the world, including the International Association for Suicide Prevention, and at the regional level, the platform has collaborated with the Safety Advisory Council and the ‘SMEX’ organization. Its efforts in this area are aimed at producing a more complete version of the new guidelines.

The new community guidelines will take effect on April 21. During the next few months, the platform will give extra training to moderators to enable them properly execute these principles and standards when they are released.

These norms and standards are presently divided into several areas, including behavioral health, mental health, and others. In each section, they offer a brief description of what is prohibited, followed by more specifics such as definitions and measures that the platform will take if these principles and standards are breached.
