The vibrant spirit of Ramadan unfolded in the narrow alleys of Matareya, a working-class neighborhood in Cairo, as thousands came together for a record-breaking Iftar.
This year marked the 10th anniversary of Matareya’s annual Iftar celebration, and it was the grandest one yet. Over 400 volunteers transformed the neighborhood’s streets into a communal dining space, setting up an impressive 700 tables along the colorful, decorated alleys.
Organizers estimate that a staggering 30,000 people joined the festive gathering to break their fast together after sundown. Unlike typical Iftar offerings intended solely for those in need, the Matareya Iftar emphasizes community and welcomes everyone with open arms.
The atmosphere buzzed with joy – bright balloons adorned the streets, fresh paint revitalized the walls, and the air thrummed with lively Ramadan music. This infectious energy drew not just those seeking a meal, but also residents who came to soak in the spectacle.
In a heartwarming display of Ramadan’s spirit of generosity, some residents who opted to celebrate at home received unexpected guests. Locals shared stories of strangers knocking on their doors, seeking a place to enjoy the festivities from their balconies, and being welcomed with open arms.
