Illuminating the Bibliotheca Alexandrina building in orange in support of the “UNiTE” campaign to support women

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, through the Women’s Studies and Social Transformation Program, organized several activities within the framework of the 16-day campaign to eliminate violence against women, which is being held this year under the title “Together we protect them”.

The program began its activities with a silent gathering in front of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in solidarity with survivors of violence around the world. The program called on all those interested in women’s issues to participate in this gathering in honour of women from different cultures and an expression of total rejection of violence against women.

Under the auspices of UN Women, the library building was lit orange for the fifth year in a row. Lighting the entire Bibliotheca Alexandrina building in orange comes as part of the “Orange the World” initiative within the framework of the United Nations Secretary-General’s “UNiTE” campaign, through which the orange colour symbolizes a future free from all forms of violence against women and girls all over the world. Given the importance of rationalizing energy consumption, the lighting was carried out using saving lamps to preserve the environment.

According to Ahram Online, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) launched a 16-day campaign to combat violence against women.

The National Council for Women (NCW) of Egypt began a 16-day campaign to end violence on Friday in honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

In Egypt, the 16-day campaign spotlights the health and psychological risks caused by violence against women by coordinating activities with other national bodies, said Maya Morsy, the president of the council.

Among the events are the opening of two women’s clinics at Azhar University and Suez Canal University, a sports event called “Yes Yoga Day,” and seminars on violence against women, women’s empowerment, and workplace safety.

The campaign also includes symposiums on other issues such as cyber-blackmail against women as well as the relationship between overpopulation and violence against women, added Morsy.

Additionally, the Egyptian National Committee for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation will launch its door-to-door “Protect Her from Circumcision” campaign in ten governorates.

According to the Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, 31 percent of Egyptian women who are or were previously married and are between the ages of 15 and 49 reported experiencing “physical, sexual, or psychological violence” at the hands of their spouses in 2021.

Egypt has enacted several pieces of legislation over the past eight years to guarantee women’s protection against all forms of violence, Morsy said, pointing to the inclusion of an article in the country’s constitution to protect women against violence.

The NCW has also established 26 units at Egyptian universities nationwide to combat violence against women.

According to the World Health Organization, up to 736 million women worldwide experience physical and/or sexual abuse at the hands of their husbands or other people.

The BA Launches the 16-Day Campaign to Combat Violence against Women

The BA Women Studies and Social Transformation Program (WSST), and the Children and Young People’s Libraries – in cooperation with the National Council for Women, the UNHCR, CARE Egypt Foundation, and Caritas-Egypt – are organizing a 16-day campaign to combat violence against women, under the slogan “Together We Protect Her.” The event starts on Sunday, 27 November 2022, in the BACC Small Theater.

The event’s program includes panel discussions, theatrical performances, and film screenings.

This event comes within the framework of the activities of the 16-day campaign to fight violence against women, and based on the mission which the BA aspires to achieve in various societal fields, in order to improve women’s conditions and raise public awareness about their issues. The BA also believes that the status of women in any society represents the outcome of an interaction between cultural, social, economic, and political factors that are intertwined in a complex way, and that the stability and progress of countries can only be achieved through the active participation of women in the public sphere.
