Sukari gold mine’s production posts $7.5bn revenues during Feb- 2023

Sukari gold mine’s production posted 5.2 million ounces in February while its revenues are estimated at about $7.5bn, according to Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla.

On an inspection visit to Sukari gold in the Eastern Desert, the minister stated that it is expected to produce between 450,000 and 480,000 ounces the current year.

Furthermore, he stated that the expansion of research and exploration activities in Egypt’s mining areas as a result of international mining companies’ entry into the Egyptian market via the offered bids enriches this activity with various expertise and technologies and opens the door to economic discoveries and better exploitation of mineral wealth.

Moreover, El-Molla visited the surface mine excavation operations and the workflow in the two extraction plants, and was informed on the mine’s performance in terms of health, occupational safety, and the environment, as well as the eagerness of those in charge to embed it as a culture among the workers.

On the other hand, the Minister of Petroleum launched a 36-megawatt solar power plant at the Sukari mine, as well as a 7.5-megawatt battery storage system to supply the mine, as one of the ways to rationalise expenditures and preserve production sustainability.

The mine’s geographical location in Egypt’s eastern desert region provides maximal benefit to the station, which is the highest area experiencing solar radiation up to nearly 10 hours per day and the largest station servicing a mining operation.

The station helps to reduce mine fuel usage by 22 million litres per year, as well as carbon emissions by an average of 60,000 tonnes per year.
