The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) is the first bank in Egypt and Africa to earn the ISO 27001:2022 information security certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI), making it the first bank to achieve this prestigious recognition.

The bank successfully fulfilled all the requirements of the new standard, which was issued in October 2022 as an updated version of the previous ISO 27001:2013.

In 2016, the National Bank of Egypt became the first bank in Egypt and North Africa to receive the compliance certification, and it renewed it for a third time in May 2022 after undergoing a comprehensive evaluation of all controls that include securing data within data centers, call centers, and electronic service branches.

NBE Chairman, Hisham Okasha, expressed his pride in the bank’s ability to obtain this international certification, reflecting on the bank’s commitment to the latest international standards to protect the security of customer and employee data.

It also reflects the bank’s efficiency and effectiveness in managing its operations and banking services, as well as its growing role in serving and protecting the national economy and achieving financial and banking stability while preserving depositors’ funds and maximizing returns on invested capital.

On the other hand, Dalia El-Baz, the Vice Chairman of NBE, confirmed the bank’s interest in implementing a comprehensive framework of governance controls and technology security to apply new standards in line with international regulations.

Adopting these international standards is to increase the efficiency and readiness of the bank’s various specialized teams in securing customer data by preemptively combating cyber risks and technology-related hazards, securing all digital products that the bank offers its customers, and making their financial transactions easier and safer.

Meanwhile, Abeer Khedr, the Head of Cybersecurity at the National Bank of Egypt, added that the bank was able to achieve compliance with the new standard requirements by applying a clear and integrated cybersecurity strategy that takes into account the latest technological developments and maintains its capability to deal with cyber threats proactively.

The National Bank of Egypt’s attainment of the ISO 27001:2022 information security certification confirms its commitment to prioritizing cybersecurity while offering innovative digital solutions that cater to its customer’s demands.
