Egyptian Senator Sherine Sabry, a member of the Senate, has proposed replacing the occupational title “Housewife” on Egypt’s national ID cards with “Generation Builder,” arguing that the new designation more accurately reflects the vital role mothers play in raising future generations and contributing to society.
Speaking during an interview on the television program Akher El Nahar, Sabry emphasized that the proposal extends beyond a simple administrative change, describing it as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for Egyptian mothers who dedicate their lives to raising their children.
Recognizing the Value of Mothers’ Contributions
According to Sabry, the title “Generation Builder” better captures the reality of motherhood, acknowledging that women who devote themselves to raising children contribute directly to building society by nurturing future doctors, engineers, judges, educators, and professionals.
She stressed that mothers play a foundational role in shaping future generations and deserve recognition for their long-term contribution to national development.
A Symbolic Recognition, Not a Policy Priority Shift
Responding to criticism that other national issues should take precedence, Sabry clarified that the proposal does not diminish the importance of addressing other challenges facing the country.
She noted that members of parliament, government ministries, and executive institutions continue working simultaneously on multiple public issues while remaining responsive to citizens’ concerns.
Sabry explained that the proposal is intended solely as a symbolic recognition of millions of Egyptian women whose contributions often go unrecognized despite their essential role within families and society.

Sabry noted that some commentators pointed to the United Arab Emirates as having adopted a similar concept, saying this demonstrates that recognizing the social value of mothers through alternative occupational descriptions is not an entirely new idea.

The senator emphasized that while Egyptian women have made significant progress by assuming leadership positions across various sectors, women who choose to dedicate themselves to caring for their families also deserve meaningful recognition.
She expressed hope that, if adopted, the designation “Generation Builder” could eventually become part of official celebrations marking Mother’s Day, describing it as a symbolic gift from the Egyptian state to mothers in recognition of their contribution to society.
Although the proposal has generated widespread public discussion, it remains a parliamentary proposal and has not been adopted as an official change to Egypt’s national ID card system.
