EU Ambassador-Designate Praises Egypt’s Healthcare System During Aswan Inspection Visit

Mona Yousef

European Union Ambassador-Designate to Egypt, Angelina Eichhorst, has commended the quality and development of healthcare services in Aswan, describing them as “impressive” during an official inspection visit on Saturday. Her remarks signal growing international recognition of Egypt’s healthcare reform efforts and underscore the EU’s strong strategic partnership with the country.

During her visit, Eichhorst toured several public healthcare facilities, including El-Masala Specialized Hospital. She was accompanied by senior representatives from the General Healthcare Authority (GHA), Amal Ammar, President of the National Council for Women, and Aswan Governor Ismail Kamal.

“Egypt continues to be one of the EU’s most supported and trusted partners in the region,” Eichhorst stated. “The progress made in the healthcare sector here in Aswan is impressive and speaks to the strength of our shared commitment to development.”

The ambassador’s visit is part of broader EU support for Egypt’s healthcare transformation, particularly in underserved regions such as Upper Egypt. The European Union has remained a key international partner in strengthening Egypt’s health infrastructure through technical assistance, capacity building, and investment in public health systems.

Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Healthcare Authority, welcomed Eichhorst’s comments, noting that Egypt’s achievements in healthcare are gaining increasing international validation.

“The General Healthcare Authority is now seen as a national and international model for reform and citizen-focused healthcare delivery,” El-Sobky said in a statement following the visit.

He also highlighted the significant progress made under Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance system, which is currently being expanded in Aswan. The rollout aligns with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s national vision to improve access to quality medical care and prioritize sustainable development in Upper Egypt.

“Aswan plays a central role in our strategy to deliver advanced and equitable healthcare services under the new insurance model,” El-Sobky added.

The EU’s ongoing collaboration with Egypt includes health-focused development aid, partnerships with local institutions, and joint efforts to enhance maternal health, digital healthcare, and pandemic preparedness.

Eichhorst’s visit and her public endorsement of Aswan’s healthcare services are likely to deepen EU-Egypt relations and encourage continued multilateral support for Egypt’s comprehensive healthcare reform agenda.
