Egypt’s Maya Morsi, Chairperson of the National Council for Women [NCW], met with Senator Hon Katy Gallagher, the Australian Minister for Finance, Minister for Women, and Minister for Public Service, to discuss working with Egypt on women’s empowerment.
Morsi reviewed the progress made in increasing women’s financial inclusion in the meeting. She highlighted that the efforts made have resulted in an impressive 244% increase in this regard. Morsi emphasized the need for Egypt to continue working towards enhancing women’s participation in the labor market. This includes enacting legislation supporting their empowerment and promoting equal workplace opportunities.
Morsi expressed sincere interest in cooperating with Australia to exchange experiences and knowledge. This could help Egypt further improve its efforts towards women’s empowerment.
The ministers also discussed the issue of violence against women and the negative impact of technology-induced violence. They acknowledged that these are significant barriers to women’s empowerment and their ability to assume leadership positions. They agreed to work together to find practical solutions to address these challenges and promote gender equality.
Morsi conducted a detailed review of Egypt’s efforts to tackle the disturbing issue of violence against women in liaison with Belgium and various United Nations organizations. During the meeting, participants from different organizations shared their insights, experiences, and expertise to develop comprehensive solutions for this menace. The discussions ranged from analyzing the root causes of violence against women to examining the effectiveness of existing policies and practices. The experts also highlighted the importance of raising awareness and engaging local communities to create a safe environment for women. The recommendations developed through the meeting aimed to provide a roadmap for policymakers to take concrete actions towards protecting women’s rights and ensuring their safety.
