Egypt’s Giza Zoo Goes Cageless Following Major Renovations

Egypt’s most infamous zoo and the first modern zoo in the African region is set to shut down for a little over a year due to an upcoming renovation in the Giza zoo, and the Orman Garden.

The Government announced the renovation process to begin in January 2023; they plan to turn the previously caged zoo into an open sanctuary for animals. Designated visiting trails will protect the zoo and its animals.

The substantial project will be led by the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture, Land Reclamation, and The National Military Production.

These upcoming constructions will also include the botanical Omran garden close by, which will be connected to the zoo through a direct gondola lift between both parks. This will commemorate their historic link when they were first built and inaugurated simultaneously by Khedive Ismail.

The popular family attraction is expected to reopen after 12-18 months.
