Egypt’s CBE exchanges its pioneering cyber-security experience with Ghanaian counterpart

In June and August of 2023, representatives from the Central Bank of Ghana visited the Central Bank of Egypt to share knowledge about cybersecurity. The Ghanaian delegation sought to learn from Egypt’s expertise in this field and gain insight into the structure and tasks of the Cybersecurity central departments, such as the Computing Incident Response Team for Financial Sector (EG-FinCIRT).

 They hoped to use this knowledge to build the capacities of the Financial Industry Command Security Operations Centre (FICSOC) and enhance efforts directed towards developing strong cybersecurity frameworks for African financial institutions.

During the visit, the two banks discussed future partnerships and cooperation mechanisms, highlighting the importance of applying cybersecurity frameworks to enhance regional cyber capabilities.

The Central Bank of Egypt provided an overview of the cybersecurity sector’s structure, objectives, and strategy, as well as the governance regulations and critical role played by EG-FinCIRT in detecting, responding to, and mitigating cybersecurity incidents. The delegation also learned about the mechanisms and rules of granting fintech solutions’ licenses and fintech applications in Egypt, as well as other services provided by the Cybersecurity Sector at the CBE.

Overall, the visit aimed to strengthen cybersecurity readiness assessment strategies and assurance programs to protect banks and financial institutions against cyberattacks. The Ghanaian delegation recognized the Central Bank of Egypt’s pioneering role in this field and hoped to coordinate and boost collaboration between the Central Bank of Egypt and the FICSOC at the Central Bank of Ghana.A delegation of the Central Bank of Ghana visited the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) between 31 June and 3 August 2023. The visit aimed to exchange expertise in the field of Cybersecurity and benefit from Egypt’s outstanding know-how in this field.

The visit of the Ghanaian delegation is an affirmation of the CBE’s pioneering role in Cybersecurity at the African level, backed by its successful establishment and operation of the first Sectoral Computer Incident Response Team dedicated to the Financial Sector (EG-FinCIRT).

The Ghanaian delegation capitalized on the technical and operational expertise of the Cybersecurity sector professionals, as well as studying the structure and the tasks of the Cybersecurity’s central departments, particularly the Computing Incident Response Team for Financial Sector (EG-FinCIRT), to build the capacities and enhance the efforts directed towards developing the Financial Industry Command Security Operations Centre (FICSOC).

The Ghanaian delegation tackled the future partnerships and cooperation mechanisms between the Central Bank of Egypt and the Central Bank of Ghana, highlighting the vital role of applying the Cybersecurity framework for African financial institutions to enhance regional cyber capabilities. Moreover, the visit included showcasing governance regulations and reporting dedicated channels adopted at the Central Bank of Egypt to respond to all cyber incidents.
