Egyptian PM Announces January 7 Paid Holiday to Mark Coptic Christmas

by Nada Khaled

Last Sunday, Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli issued a decision declaring next Sunday, January 7, an official holiday to mark Christmas.

Paid holidays will be given to workers in public enterprises, private companies, local administration units, ministries, and government agencies.

Some Orthodox Christians celebrate Coptic Christmas on January 7th each year; this holiday is not to be confused with the global celebration of Christmas on December 25th.

The Julian calendar, which comes before the Gregorian calendar used by other Christians, determines the date.
