Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has stressed Egypt’s confidence in Comoros’ presidency of the African Union during this stage in which Africa is facing multiple political, economic, and security challenges.

Shoukry made the remarks during his meeting on Wednesday with Comoros Foreign Minister Dhoihir Dhoulkamal on the fringes of the 42nd session of the African Union’s Executive Council in Addis Ababa.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that the Egyptian foreign minister congratulated his Comoran counterpart as his country will take over the rotating presidency of the African Union for a year during the AU heads of state summit slated for February 18-19.

Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s support for Comoros’ presidency of the African Union noting that Cairo is looking forward to coordination and joint action towards enhancing collective African action under the AU umbrella.

The meeting touched on Egypt-Comoros relations and built on the meeting held between the leaders of the two countries in Egypt during the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development in 2019.

Shoukry invited the Comoran foreign minister to visit Egypt to propel joint cooperation.

He further highlighted Egypt’s interest in fostering cooperation with Comoros in economic, trade, investment, and technical fields.

The two ministers agreed to intensify consultation and coordination in the coming stage within the framework of a common will to boost work under the AU umbrella.
