Egypt Stimulates Egyptian Red Crescent’s Role in Managing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

by Mona Yousef

Egypt’s Social Solidarity Minister and Vice Chairman of the ERC’s Board of Directors-Nevine El-Qabbaj- lauded ERC’s commendable efforts in alleviating the suffering in the Gaza Strip.

During a recent meeting of the ERC’s board, El-Qabbaj emphasized the organization’s efforts are widely recognized either locally or internationally. She highlighted the ERC’s commitment to providing better support to its dedicated volunteers, all in pursuit of fulfilling its noble humanitarian mission.

The board of directors unanimously approved a proposed budget aimed at strengthening the ERC’s response to the Gaza crisis. Additionally, they greenlit establishing a humanitarian kitchen in Sheikh Zuweid City, near Gaza border, for catering daily meals daily to those who suffer in the Gaza Strip.

Another crucial decision made during the meeting was to enhance coordination efforts with the ERC’s counterparts in the Gaza Strip. This strategic move aims to ensure the swift and sustainable provision of much-needed humanitarian services to the distressed population.

Egypt has a pivotal role in facilitating the delivery of much-needed relief and vital humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing. Recently, the Karm Abu Salem crossing has been open for the entry of aid and fuel into the besieged territory, using hundreds of trucks.

ERC’s volunteers are constantly present between Egypt and Gaza, diligently delivering aid and extending crucial psychological support to wounded foreign nationals. Medical care is also offered to the Palestinians in Arish, Sheikh Zuweid, Bir Al-Abd, and the designated medical care center for wounded Palestinians.

The Israeli war in Gaza persists, with relentless attacks leading to a staggering loss of lives and injuries. The majority of those affected are women and children, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians. Shockingly, nearly 570,000 individuals in the Gaza Strip are grappling with “catastrophic hunger”, that borders on famine, according to UNRWA. The World Food Program estimates that over 2.2 million people in Gaza face crisis-level or worse levels of acute food insecurity, exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli blockade.
