An official statement released by the Ministry of Health and Population on Tuesday, August 22, declared that the ministry had detected Egypt’s first two confirmed cases of the new fast-spreading COVID-19 variant EG.5.2, commonly known as “Eris”.

The statement read: The test results from monitoring centers for cases of influenza-like illnesses, acute respiratory diseases, and pneumonia confirm two positive cases of the sub lineage of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), EG.5.2 infects the upper respiratory tract, causing a runny nose, sore throat, and other cold-like symptoms.

So far, the two patients are suffering from mild symptoms and are showing signs of recovery, according to the ministry’s statement.
