Central Bank Officially Introduces New 20-Pound Note

by Nada Khaled

Yesterday, the Central Bank of Egypt finally introduced the new 20-pound currency made of polymer, produced using the latest banknote production lines in the New Administrative Capital, emphasizing that it does not cancel previous issues of the same denomination.

The decision came in light of keenness to keep pace with the highest international standards used in securing and printing currencies and continue their efforts to implement a clean monetary policy and raise the quality of banknotes in the Egyptian market.

Egyptian citizens can now obtain the new twenty pounds through the network of Egyptian bank branches, which surpasses 4,500.

The new twenty-pound note is considered the first monetary denomination to be introduced to the Egyptian market through advanced technologies that allow the blind and visually impaired to easily distinguish it and learn its value by touching the distinctive signs at the top left of the banknote.

Notably, the introduction of the new currency helps reduce the cost of printing banknotes, especially for the most circulated denominations, including the polymeric ten-pound denomination that was introduced last year and is in line with the goals of the sustainable development program adopted by the state through Egypt’s Vision 2030.

The new twenty-pound banknote comes in a modern, Innovative design, as it expresses the Egyptian will to transform to build the new republic while preserving the foundations of the ancient pharaonic civilization and the Islamic heritage of the state.

That is visible through the distinctive printing of the Muhammad Ali Mosque on one side, while the other shows the statue of Queen Cleopatra and the Great Pyramid with the chariot and the warrior.

It is worth noting that the new polymer currency has many advantages, including being flexible, durable, and thinner than regular paper money. In addition, it is eco-friendly, recyclable, and difficult to forge.

The CBE stressed that issuing this new version does not cancel dealing in the regular twenty-pound banknote circulating in the markets and directed to continue dealing with it both versions of the currency.
