Al-Azhar Restates Its Standing Over Verbal Divorce

by nevine

Sunni Islam’s top religious institution, Al- Al-Azhar, announced, in a statement on Thursday, that the government has the full legal right to take serious action against men who ignore or postpone their divorce documentation and issue legal penalties for that act.

That came in correspondence with the Council of Senior Scholars’ new regulations concerning verbal divorce cases, which were issued at their regular meeting back in 2017 on February 5.

The institution emphasized the harm caused by this delay to women and their legal rights. In their statement, they legally obligated men to document their divorce papers right after their occurrence to ensure the legal rights of the divorced women and their children.

Following Al-Azhar’s statement, the government is expected to start taking legal action very soon, in addition to issuing mandatory fines for men who continue to reject or detain the submission of their divorce documents.
