AECID Partners with UNODC, Interior Ministry to Combat Gender-based Violence

by Nada Khaled

The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) has recently joined forces with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Egyptian Ministry of Interior in a two-year project that completed the last of a series of 8 training workshops that focused on strengthening Egyptian law enforcement officers’ capacities to properly respond to cases of violence against women.

Taking place from June 20 to 22, the workshop featured contributions from Spanish law enforcement officials and experts from the UNODC.

The presentations offered Egyptian police officers’ information, and case studies that can be applied to better communicate with survivors and direct them to introduce services that cater specifically to survivor needs.

The workshop series aimed to provide the legal framework, investigative skills, and protection protocols needed to properly manage cases by recognizing the significant impact of first responders on survivor outcomes.

Furthermore, the experience highlighted the importance of national and international coordination to combat violence against women in all its forms through the exchange of expertise with Spanish law enforcement officials.

It is worth noting that the AECID is a longtime partner of the Ministry of Interior and plays a huge role in defending women’s right to safety and eliminating all forms of gender-based violence.

The AECID is fully committed to the socioeconomic development of the country. Collaborating with public institutions and civil society alike and aligning its activities with the SDG 2030 and the Egypt Vision 2030, the Spanish Cooperation focuses on ecological transition and green economy, gender equality, and migration.

The project has pushed gender-sensitive responses and case-management strategies, contributing to more equitable outcomes for survivors pursuing justice and support.

Moreover, supported by UNODC, capacity-building workshops provide platforms for generative collaboration across institutions.
