Leila Hosny: Driving Sustainable Development and Women’s Empowerment Across Egypt

Amira El Gamal

Behind every successful development initiative that transforms lives, empowers women, or preserves cultural heritage, there is often a leader who believes that people are the foundation of lasting progress. For Leila Hosny, Executive Director of the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, this belief has guided a distinguished career dedicated to creating sustainable opportunities and expanding pathways to empowerment across Egypt.

Through her strategic leadership, Hosny has helped strengthen the Foundation’s mission of addressing multidimensional poverty through impactful programs in education, economic empowerment, social protection, culture, and creativity. Her approach is rooted in evidence-based decision-making, ensuring that resources and investments are directed toward initiatives capable of delivering meaningful and long-term impact.

A Career Built on Purpose

Hosny’s commitment to human development is the result of more than 15 years of experience in sustainability, social responsibility, and development finance. Throughout her career, she has played a significant role in designing and implementing initiatives that improve livelihoods, support vulnerable communities, and expand economic opportunities.

Before assuming her current leadership role, she led sustainability and sustainable finance efforts within one of Egypt’s leading banking institutions, helping translate financial strategies into practical solutions that benefited communities. Her work contributed to initiatives supporting small-scale farmers, promoting financial inclusion, and enhancing financial literacy among children and young people.

Championing Women and Preserving Heritage

One of the defining aspects of Hosny’s work has been her commitment to empowering women and supporting local communities through sustainable economic opportunities.

Among the initiatives she helped advance is “Ibdaa Men Masr” (Creativity from Egypt), a program that has improved livelihoods and created opportunities for more than 8,000 artisans while preserving Egypt’s rich cultural heritage and traditional crafts.

She also contributed to the launch of the “Ghalia” platform in partnership with Egypt’s National Council for Women, providing support for the economic and social empowerment of Egyptian women. Through such initiatives, Hosny continues to demonstrate that empowering women creates positive ripple effects that benefit families, communities, and the broader economy.

Academic Excellence and Global Perspective

Hosny’s professional achievements are supported by a strong academic foundation. She earned an Executive Master’s degree in Social Business and Entrepreneurship from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), following her graduation with highest honors from The American University in Cairo.

This combination of academic excellence and practical experience has enabled her to bridge strategy and implementation, helping organizations create measurable social impact while maintaining long-term sustainability.

Leadership Defined by Impact

Beyond her executive responsibilities, Hosny continues to contribute her expertise through advisory and leadership roles that strengthen partnerships and promote sustainable development. Her work reflects a deep commitment to collaboration, innovation, and inclusive growth.

Today, Leila Hosny stands as a powerful example of modern female leadership—one that measures success not only by professional accomplishments, but by the positive and lasting impact created in the lives of others. Her journey illustrates how visionary leadership, when combined with purpose and determination, can become a catalyst for meaningful social change.
