Egypt’s Grand Egyptian Museum’s (GEM) CEO, Ahmed Ghoneim, presented the museum’s development and international collaborations during a high-profile cultural event hosted by Egypt’s permanent delegation to UNESCO in Paris.
Addressing attendees in UNESCO’s main hall, Ghoneim detailed the museum’s history and Egypt’s extensive investment in GEM, designed to become the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. He emphasized Egypt’s efforts to preserve and showcase its rich archaeological heritage through state-of-the-art conservation and restoration technologies.
Highlighting key partnerships with countries including Japan and France, Ghoneim also reviewed the museum’s most notable collections, particularly rare artefacts from ancient Egypt, underscoring GEM’s role as a global center for culture and research. He encouraged international audiences to visit the museum, calling it a monumental symbol of Egypt’s enduring legacy.
Alaa Youssef, Egypt’s ambassador to France and UNESCO permanent delegate, described GEM’s opening as a new chapter for Egyptian heritage, emphasizing the museum’s extensive holdings, including the complete funerary collection of Tutankhamun. He also highlighted the significance of Egyptian–Japanese collaboration on the project and acknowledged the contributions of UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany during his tenure as Egypt’s tourism and antiquities minister.
The event featured remarks from Japan’s UNESCO ambassador, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, and former Director-General Irina Bokova, who praised the influence of ancient Egyptian civilization and the museum’s cultural significance. The gathering drew ambassadors and permanent delegates from UNESCO member states, senior UNESCO officials, French representatives, and experts in culture, heritage, and museology.
