World-renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass shared his ongoing quest to uncover the tomb of Queen Nefertiti and the tomb of Imhotep, the architect of the first pyramid, during a captivating session titled “Secrets of the Pharaohs” at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2025) at Expo Centre Sharjah, running until November 16.
Speaking to a mesmerized audience, Dr. Hawass highlighted his latest discovery inside the Pyramid of Khufu: a previously unknown 30-meter corridor leading to a sealed door, set to be revealed to the world in 2026. The announcement was accompanied by a virtual film taking attendees deep into the pyramids, giving them a unique digital exploration experience.
In a revealing conversation with Emirati talk show host Anas Bukhash, Dr. Hawass recounted his extensive work in Egyptology, including the establishment of the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Great Pyramid of Khufu. He emphasized the museum’s significance, with 5,000 artifacts from Tutankhamun displayed in full for the first time, and called it a monumental achievement that elevates Egypt’s cultural and economic stature globally.
“The grand museum will help Egypt’s economy to flourish as the whole world has saluted us for this achievement,” Hawass said, adding that advanced radar technologies and robotic systems have enabled archaeologists to explore hidden voids and clean the pyramid interiors safely.
Dr. Hawass also paid tribute to His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, praising his long-standing dedication to cultural preservation. He recounted the Ruler’s personal efforts in returning stolen Egyptian artifacts from Australia to Egypt, emphasizing the importance of protecting heritage.
Reflecting on his personal connection to history, Dr. Hawass said, “If I could meet any pharaoh, it would be King Khufu. I dream of the pharaohs,” recalling his own near-fatal accident under a 25-kilogram stone during excavation work.
The session captivated the audience with a virtual exploration of the pyramids, highlighting Dr. Hawass’ ongoing efforts to uncover Egypt’s hidden treasures and specifically his quest to locate Queen Nefertiti’s tomb—a discovery that could redefine understanding of the Amarna period and Egypt’s ancient history.
SIBF 2025, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority under the theme “Between You and a Book,” continues to showcase literature, culture, and cutting-edge historical research, connecting readers with the world of archaeology through immersive experiences like Dr. Hawass’ session.
