Integrating sustainability into Egypt’s cultural institutions, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Ministry of Environment have signed a cooperation protocol to designate the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) as an environmentally friendly “Green Museum.”
This joint initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader environmental strategy and its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It aims to embed environmental consciousness within the museum’s operations, infrastructure, and public outreach, making it a model of eco-responsible cultural tourism in the region.
Air Quality, Green Spaces, and Eco-Conscious Practices
The protocol outlines a number of strategic goals, including:
- Continuous monitoring of air pollution and noise levels in and around the museum using a dedicated station operated by the Ministry of Environment.
- Landscaping the surrounding area with trees and greenery to enhance the museum’s environmental profile and contribute to urban reforestation efforts.
- Using eco-friendly materials and products throughout the museum’s internal operations.
In addition, GEM will offer a range of environmental education initiatives, including:
- Exhibits and awareness materials focused on nature reserves, biodiversity, and environmental protection
- Printed guides and visual content produced by the Ministry of Environment to promote eco-tourism and showcase Egypt’s protected areas
- A dedicated environmental education program as part of the museum’s cultural events calendar
Environmental Certification and Green Infrastructure
Since its inception, the Grand Egyptian Museum has prioritized sustainable construction and environmental integration, a commitment that has earned it Green Building and Sustainability Certification. The new protocol builds on that foundation by embedding environmental practices into the museum’s daily operations and visitor experiences.
Oversight and Accountability
A joint technical committee will be established under the agreement, tasked with overseeing and evaluating the implementation of the protocol’s provisions. This committee will:
- Meet every three months—or more frequently, if needed
- Include representatives from both ministries and may draw on experts from other government bodies as required
- Submit periodic reports to the relevant authorities at GEM and the Ministry of Environment
This mechanism ensures that the sustainability commitments are measurable, transparent, and continuously improved over time.
Promoting Environmental Tourism and Cultural Awareness
By integrating environmental awareness into one of the most important cultural institutions in the Middle East, Egypt is sending a clear signal about the future of tourism: one that respects heritage, nature, and community wellbeing. Visitors to the museum will not only witness the wonders of ancient Egypt but also gain exposure to the rich biodiversity and natural heritage that modern Egypt seeks to preserve.
This initiative also supports Egypt’s growing emphasis on eco-tourism, a sector poised to expand as global travelers increasingly seek destinations that align with their environmental values.
